The economy has certainly been on the minds of busy owners in recent years.
So, I thought it might be useful to share my observations on where the Australian economy is at.
I’m fortunate to see different business owners in diverse industries each day which I like to think of as rolling R&D.
Here’s my take on the local economy based on my experience and the observations shared by many business owners.
Understanding the Age we live in can help you be adaptive in business.
The 18th Century was the Agricultural Age where Farmers ruled and owners of fertile land were prosperous.
The 19th century was the Industrial Age where factory work boomed and owners of factories made fortunes.
The 20th century was the Information Age where Knowledge workers reigned supreme. Billions were made by Founders of IT companies, many much younger than their forebears.
The 21st Century is the Conceptual Age – the age of Creators.
Motivating individuals as a Manager is ‘part art and part science’.
The art part are the psychological factors around relationships and buy-in from a team member. Motivation here is more freestyling in empowering individuals through autonomy, mastery and purpose discussed previously in my blog Are you a Type X or Type Y Manager and why it matters?
The science part is the framework within the team member and Manager work throughout the project. This is more structured and includes objectives, scope, timelines and deliverables. Motivation here is influenced by concise outcomes, not on how to achieve but on what and when we do it.

Type X management focuses on the extrinsic desires of employees around job security and rewards.
Type Y management focuses on the intrinsic desires of employees around autonomy and personal satisfaction within the activity itself.
